Tools worth noting

Things I’m still looking for –

  • Good calendar app. Sunrise maybe?
  • Location based alerts
  • Private personal assistant – even if it was dumb. just some sort of natural language processing for calendars, alerts, emails, to-dos…
  • New phone. Love my BlackberryZ10 but getting a little beat up… want small with a good battery and good camera. Poor screen and slow is fine.
  • Budget software. Mint is flakey for me, everything else is worse. I’m also the treasurer for a small non profit, and I can’t get that working right either…
    • Tried Mint, BudgetSimple, YNAB, Xero and Wave online, and HomeBank and GnuCash offline.
    • Currently using Wave… GnuCash had data corruption issues.
  • Stereo. Been using cast-off computer speakers for the last decade.
  • New Linux distro. Crunchbang is discontinued…. Windows10 is almost good, but creepy about some things and there’s no way to turn off the antivirus. I’ve never had an antivirus and I don’t feel like starting now. Large and growing percentage of my work is online now…

Things I love to use:

(Not a very unique list)

Updated in 2016 and it’s amazing how many of these packages I’ve been using for 5, 10 years now.

Irfanview – Fast image viewing and simple manipulation

Firefox

LastPass

Foobar 2000 – Fast, lightweight media player with customizable layout. Minimizes to the taskbar.

F.lux – Adjusts the colour temperature of my screen at night (like right now).

7Zip – Because sometimes people rename .rar files to .zip and tell me they ‘changed the format.’

Notepad ++ – Even supports MapBasic format highlighting, with some tweaking.

Halite – For Torrents. Why Halite? Why not 😉

DoPDF – Good PDF printer.

Netfirms – Hosts my basic pages and my domain name. Webmail isn’t the worst I’ve seen 😉 Scripting support could be better…

nosupportlinuxhosting.com – 1$/mo hosting. CPanel. Been great. Probably moving most of my pages here.

NEW:

Backblaze – unlimited backup for 60$ year. No more losing photos for me!

Shout IRC – Web based IRC with history. (currently on YUNOHost)

I have a number of apps on Sandstorm, which is awesome but in progress, and a bunch on YUNOHost on Digital Ocean VPS

I also host a few PHP apps on nosupportlinuxhosting.com

Things I want to host – Shout IRC, Etherpad, Huginn
